Can the Honeymoon last?

Can the Honeymoon last? Throughout our marriage we have heard, “enjoy it while it lasts…” But after all these decades together there is still no one I would rather spend my time with. Why is that? Why has our marriage been the outlier?

One factor may be we approach our marriage as a friendship, partnership and our ministry. Early on we talked about what our long term relationship should look like. Faith, finances, children, Curtis wanted to stay in one place long term… While we did not have all the answers to these topics, we laid a foundation so that when we got of course we knew we needed to correct.

Secondarily, around the 7th year of marriage we took the word divorce out of our vocabularies. We were in the middle of a very heated and bitter fight, and I started down the road; “if this is how it is going to be I am out!” Curtis stopped, stood calmly in front of me and said, “divorce is not in our vocabulary. Whatever it takes we will make this work.” That has eliminated many words that would have been regretted and threats that were not meant.

But the real honeymoon, the intense passion and deep intimacy came after we totally surrendered our marriage and our family to Christ’s will for us. It meant Curtis’ dream of growing old and dying in the same home did not come to pass, but it has also proved to be the surest foundation that a marriage can be built on.

Throughout the decades we have made many mistakes, sins, errors, bad investments and poor judgments, but God is faithful. He has always brought us back to green pastures and quiet waters. No matter where you are in your journey it is not too late to return to the honeymoon!

We just celebrated our 34th anniversary and are making plans for something special to mark the 35th. But in between now and then; you better believe we are making every day a little celebration!

Happy Honeymooning!

Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
