Being called by God does not guarantee things will be easy, but it will be worth it. God will supply the strength and support necessary to bring out what He has already planted in you to accomplish what He is calling you to. Or said another way; as you need it, the provision will be made available.

Mary, Jesus’ mother is the perfect example. “Greetings Favored One! The Lord is with you!” (Luke 1:28) With this kind of annunciation we could be tempted to believe that Mary was about to experience nothing but favor and pleasantries for the rest of her life. What could be a better mission than the mother of the Messiah? But scripture records a few of Mary and Joseph’s struggles, even while raising a perfect son.

The earliest evidence reflected a lack of earthly means. Jesus was born in a stable and wrapped in cloth. Mary would have known the time was close, so her preparation was to bring the best option for the baby she could afford. On the eighth day Jesus was taken for circumcision according to the law, we are told that they brought the required offering, two turtledoves for the purification rites. The ideal offering was a lamb, but if it couldn't be afforded, the turtle doves are an acceptable substitute. (See Leviticus 12:8) Joseph as a carpenter would not have been the upper class of society, they were poor.

Luke also records that the perfect Son of Man still caused His parents grief. After attending the Feast of the Passover in Jerusalem (they were devout Jews) Mary and Joseph left with the rest of their party, the caravan. But Jesus remained behind, three days (coincidence?) in the temple. (see Luke 2:41-51) When they finally realize Jesus had not joined the group His parents went on a search for Him. They found Him learning and teaching in the temple. Just like us, even the best excuse is met with parental sternness, “Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, your father and I have been anxiously looking for you!” (Luke 2:48b)

If Mary was so favored and still had parenting heartaches raising a perfect Son, we must give ourselves and our children some grace. Stay tuned for part two, God’s Own Son - Who are My Mother and Brothers.”

Happy Honeymooning!

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)
