Are helpers less then those they help?

You don’t have to look too hard to find passionate opposing voices on this question. There is a cultural mantra that pronounces self denial as evil, old fashioned, oppressive and misogynistic. But is that God’s original intent when he designed the “Helper” in the Garden of Eden? (Genesis 2:18)
Throughout human history many “helpers” have risen to notoriety by putting their needs, comforts, desires and even safety aside to promote those less fortunate or able than themselves. A short list: Mother Teresa, Father Damien, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Oscar Schindler, Elizabeth Fry, and of course Jesus.
In scripture God is repeatedly referred to as “helper.” (Hebrews 13:6, Psalm 54:4, 30:10, 118:7, 10:14) Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as the “helper…the Father will send” (John 14:26) Would we dare say that we are greater than the Holy Spirit?
No! God’s original design in the garden, when he declared, “it is not good for man to be alone” brought a unity into creation that until then had only existed within the Holy Trinity. As a woman I am particularly equipped where my husband is in need.
Just as Mother Teresa gave out of her ability and access (and often beyond it) to the poor souls in the streets of Kolkata, India, I give out of a position of talent and abundance. God’s design is for the man to take the front position in battle. He is to lead with Praise and Holy Armor! My husband is meant to take the brunt of the assault. I am to follow and help in safety and confidence. This does not mean I do not enter the battle, it means my position is following the orders of the commander, my husband, who must get orders directly from God.
Today, many would say that to put yourself second is a sign of weakness and stupidity. But, I know peace comes through trusting in the never changing design of the One who loves me and has my best interest planned!
Happy Honeymooning!
Genesis 2:18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
