Life in the slow lane, a better view

Does it sometimes feel like everyone around you has gone mad? Do you ever catch yourself saying, “No one knows how to drive on this road but me!” I heard those words come out of my mouth as I drove alone to my teaching position in Dallas.

The noise of daily life can be overwhelming. The loud aggressive voices of everything counter to godliness, or do what feels good philosophy, cancel culture… it just gets so loud and moves so fast that we start to see and believe that we are the only one still believing and holding to God’s immutable truths. That is exactly where the prince of darkness needs you to believe.

The reality is that all around us are fellow believers, angels warring on our behalf (Daniel 10: 8-14) and the Holy Spirit full of power (John 16:7). Greater is he who is in you. (1 John 4:4) But it is difficult to live in that truth when we are surrounded by such loud clamor of opposition. From the White House down to the school house culture looks to be flowing away from God and Truth.

My eyes were opened that day as I drove aggressively, jockeying for position to be ahead of the traffic. That’s when I uttered those words, “No one knows how to drive on this road but me!” At that very moment I looked over into the “slow lane” and a woman about my age was driving the speed limit. She was smiling and focused on the road. I safely merged right and stayed in the slow lane driving the speed limit all the way to work. I arrived a minute or two late, but I had peace and was in a mindset to be able to teach.

I attempt to stay in the slow lane now, in all of my life’s activities. I try to observe those around me and allow for others’ errors. It is amazing how much you “see” when you are driving the speed limit in the slow lane.

Happy Honeymooning!

2 Kings 6: 14-17 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”

“Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.”

And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
