Making your marriage a WALK-ON song

We can all see it, just by the music queuing up; Rocky Balboa running the stairs at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, at the climax, when he is finally ready, arms raise high overhead indicating victory! If you're like me, the mere mention of the scene brings the song to mind. (confession, playing it right now.)

But can your marriage be someone’s walk-on song? In the Bible we have some examples of marriages that live up to the model. Abraham and Sarah, not perfect but certainly a solid inspirational couple. Isaac and Rebekah, a true love story, but not without drama. Joseph and Mary, a beautiful example of servant love and obedience. Aquila and Priscilla, famous for their business partnership and dedication to the work of the Apostles. Can our present day marriages have this long lasting testimony and influence?

They must! Today as much as any time in human history we need clear, true voices. Your marriage was designed by God to carry His covenant to the world, it must be shining and resplendent. That does not mean perfect, just read the accounts of the above mentioned couples from the Bible.

There is only one perfect marriage, that is between Jesus Christ and his Bride the Church. That is the standard we are aiming at. We are to be guide markers pointing the way to Jesus’ model of marriage. Not allowing the setbacks and struggles to get in the way, but modeling servant love.

What elements does a good walk-on song contain: people must be able to relate to it, it should bring up a specific image when heard, and it must encourage the audience to want to be better.

If your marriage is going to be relatable you will have to be working within your marriage mission. Your marriage should cause other couples to long to have the passion and connection you have. It should bring a sense of truth that ALL marriages were designed by God to be salt and light to this world.

But it is rooted in your private inner prayer and devotion to God’s Word. Both individually and as a couple. That is the foundation and glue of a great love story.

Happy Honeymooning!

Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
